Albert Bierstadt's 1862 paint of Mount Ascutney from Claremont, New Hampshire

The purpose of the Claremont New Hampshire Historical Society (herafter Claremont Historical Society or CHS) is to:

  • Preserve and publish historical knowledge of Claremont, New Hampshire.
  • Collect, acquire, and preserve documents, records and artifact of local historical significance and to record accounts, stories, and folklore concerning Claremont.
  • Acquire and maintain buildings to protect and display said items.
  • Participate in activities that promote interest in Claremont's history.

The Claremont Historical Society (CHS) was founded in 1963. It has been headquartered at 26 Mulberry Street since 1977, when Mary Patten left the Society her antiques and home in memory of Ruth Porter Newell and Dr. Harman Newell, whose home was located at 26 Mulberry Street for many years. The Society has kept the house as a museum to Claremont History ever since, and has received many donations over the years. The Society's holdings have enriched other sites in town, including the Opera House and the Common Man.

Please read The History of 26 Mulberry Street to learn about the history of the building.

The Claremont History Museum is open from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. every Saturday and 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. every Wednesday night from June 1 through Sept. 28. If you would like to help restore the museum and preserve Claremont's history, please join as a member, make a donation, or volunteer at claremonthistoric@aol.com.
